Legalities: Understanding the Laws of Eloping in Paris

Before you jet off to your elopement in Paris, it's important to understand the legal requirements for getting married in Paris.

Whilst eloping may seem like a simple and spontaneous choice, there are certain legalities that must be followed to ensure your marriage is legally recognised.

Firstly, you will need to provide the necessary documents to get married in France. These include valid passports, birth certificates, and a Certificate of No Impediment, which confirms that you are free to marry.

Additionally, if you have been married before, you will need to provide divorce or death certificates to prove your previous marriage has ended.

Once you have gathered all the necessary documents, you will need to submit them to the local town hall in Paris, known as the Mairie, at least 30 days before your desired wedding date. This is to allow sufficient time for the administrative process and for the publication of banns, which publicly announce your intention to marry.

It's important to note that the ceremony itself must take place at the town hall and cannot be held at iconic landmarks or outdoor venues. However, once the legal marriage has taken place, you are free to have a symbolic or religious ceremony at a different location.
